Electronic merchandise monitoring is consistently ranked as one of the most effective strategies to combat retail shoplifting and employee theft. Comprising security tags, security labels and antennas, the system can see that merchandise is protected at a product-based level, acting as a system to alert retailers of theft incidents.
But like all technology, and indeed all loss prevention strategies, it is only as good as the practices, procedures and training that support it. So here are ENGUARD's best practice tips on security labels and tagging ......
The EAS system is designed to support your staff in the fight against shoplifting, but to do this it needs to work effectively and staff should understand exactly how it works. Your EAS antenna should be checked daily to ensure that the power is on, that the antenna is working properly and that the tag de-activator is powered up and working properly.
Staff should also be trained in the tag "no-go" area around the antenna. This area should be kept away from tagged goods, EAS tags or decorations that could interfere with the antenna's function.

When it comes to labels, there are different magnetic strengths and there are different types of labels suitable for specific uses.
Security tags come in different strengths, including standard, extra strength, super strength and multi-pole. This strength affects the ease with which shoplifters can force the tag open. Super Strength is the minimum recommended label strength and is stronger than the strength that provides additional security.
In addition to clothing labels, there are also labels specifically designed to protect items such as alcohol and glasses. Also, labels can be applied to products in different ways as an alternative to having the label pin pass through the product. Options include lanyards and cable tags for products such as handbags or sports shoes.
Labels are also available in different sizes and shapes, including round, pencil and square. Round shapes with the same size on the front and back of the label are usually considered best as they are more difficult to pry open.

Where you place labels and tags on your products is important for the appearance of your merchandise and also for ease of checkout when separating tags and deactivating them.
Security labels should be positioned in such a way that they do not interfere with the customer's experience of the product. For example, labels might be located on the back waistband or back pocket of jeans. On shirts or tops they might be located on the back of the item, just below the collar. Uniformly positioned labels look neater in shop, but also allow sales staff to find and separate them quickly.
